About

Pepe Hidalgo’s artwork presents a narrative in figurative and abstract genres but figurative, to him, is not related to realism but created from his mind, imagination, and sense of reality. Through his paintings, a feeling of strength is created by his use of glazes and velatures which achieves a sensation of space. A distinctive feature of his artworks include an element of a two-colored cord that behaves as the umbilical cord that unites him to the universe. It allows him to time travel back and forth as it supports his weight and pulls him back into reality which is his signature. Art has allowed Hidalgo to achieve freedom and expression without prejudice, and to step out of the boundary to do what he dares. He appreciates the knowledge of astrology, mythology, history, and life experiences and aims to understand the relationship of the past and present in relation to human beings. As an adolescent, Hidalgo frequently visited the Museo del Prado in Madrid where he encountered his first teacher Francisco de Goya. His inspiration stems from Velázquez, Zurbarán, El Bosco, movements of the 20th century, Picasso and American artists Francis Bacon, Freud, Esteban Vicente, and Pollock and later influenced by Velazques, Zurbaran, El Bosco, and the impressionists. Miro, Picasso, Francis Bacon, Pollock, and Esteban Vicente have also contributed to his work. Hidalgo studies were completed in Madrid, Spain and Utrecht, Netherlands, he also began to explore Abstract Expressionism. He studied form, color and perspective individually in detail. Now his works juxtaposes all three aspects. Today Hidalgo’s artworks are exhibited and are in private collections in Spain, Germany, Belgium, Canada, and Holland. His paintings invoke personal elements that show both the process and the object side of artmaking. Each spatial moment depicts different aspects of time such as leisure and rest, moments where time slows and stops momentarily or permanently. Hidalgo captures his audience by invoking the ever ineffable nature of time and its ability to emerge and manifest into the present. The scenarios in each work have their own story and relation to theory and history within art, within the art world and outside of it.
